Social media has introduced all of us to the idea of Throwback Thursday (or #TBT) as a way to honor, remember, or poke fun at the past. Today, we are proud to share this special TBT post about our former Wish Kid Brandon Clanton.
In 2010, Brandon was an active teen facing medical treatment for Rhabdomyosarcoma, the most common soft tissue cancer in young people. He wished to sail on a seven-night Caribbean cruise that included excursions at every port. CWFI arranged for his family to travel from Georgia to Miami where they embarked on his dream vacation. Brandon had a great time on his cruise! He LOVED the Caribbean!
Today, we are delighted to report that Brandon is a happy and healthy 21-year old man. The Clanton family is hosting the Billy Clanton Memorial Race Weekend at the Senoia Raceway in Senoia, Georgia over the Fourth of July weekend. When we spoke to Brandon’s mother Stacey, she said the family was profoundly grateful for Brandon’s Wish and his well-being. She shares their story below.
“Billy Clanton was my Father-In-Law that passed away several years ago who was known for his dirt racing career. He traveled the country racing dirt, but Senoia was his home track so they wanted to start a memorial race in his honor. Shane Clanton is my brother-in-law who races and is racing in the memorial race. He is also the owner of the car that Brandon is going to drive this weekend in one of the lower classes.
This is a huge honor for my husband’s family and we are looking forward to the weekend. Shane and my husband Rusty thought it would be a good idea to sell t-shirts for the race and donate the money, so we decided that since this would be Brandon’s first real race and he has been through so much that we wanted to honor him as well. We picked Children’s Wish Foundation to help another child that might not get to have a vacation or get a computer or whatever their wish may be. We may not raise very much money but we are going to try and hopefully it will help go towards making a child smile.
Brandon was twelve when he was diagnosed with a tumor and the racing community really supported him and our family. He is a great young man who is a full time college student at Gordon University in Barnesville, GA and is on the Dean’s list again this semester. I am very proud of him and how he wants to pay it forward to others. He has always wanted to race and his Uncle Shane is giving him that opportunity this weekend.” ~ Stacey Clanton
